Eco-Creative: How to make a jute necklace display

Used cardboard boxes can be turned into something pretty and useful before being tossed into the recycle bin. Using a necklace display as a pattern trace the silhouette into cardboard, cut it out and cover it with jute on both sides. The display will need a stand; ensure to cover it with jute as well and place a ribbon underneath to hold together the stand and the display. Now you can decorate your necklace display with something cute like old crochet pieces, or with a bow or rose made of recycled fabric.

Beading with chain Jewelry Making Tutorial

I really like the look of stringed beads in necklaces; however, I dread having to crimp the crimping beads and making sure that the stringing wire is tight enough at both ends. Recently I discovered that this itty bitty vintage chain is perfect to string large beads (10mm Preciosa Czech) or any beads with a large hole to string the chain trough. The chain is a little over 1mm wide.

Supplies:
10mm Czech Beads
Dainty Chain (available at Antica Treasures)
Metal Spacers
Seam Binding Ribbon (rayon)
Prairie Swallow (at Antica)
Jumprings
Mallet
Steel Bench Block

Instructions:
To make a necklace like this, find some large beads and metal spacers. Start by cutting 9 inch piece of chain, close one of the ends with a thin 6mm jumpring, thread a metal spacer and a bead, continue in this manner until you are satisfied with the lenght of your beaded piece. Close the other end with another 6mm jumpring. Attach a connector to one side, for this project I chose the Prairie Swallow Stamping which I hammered down to flatten it and texturize it and I punk a hole on it's beak and connected it to my beaded chain. I curled the tail with the rosary pliers and attached a large jumpring 9mm. Connect a large jumpring 9mm to the other side of your beaded chain and string through some crinkly and antiqued seam binding ribbon (the ribbon should be long enough to give you the desired lenght for your necklace). Connect the ribbon to the other end of the necklace with a bow. This is your clasp.

Dreaming of Spring! Collage Art Tutorial

I would like to share one of my most recent projects with you! This weekend my daughter and I took out all of our "goodies" and created some neat projects.

Supplies: 4x4 Canvas, Pale Green Acrylic Paint, Large Brush, Mod Podge Glue, Vintage Chandelier Crystal, Feather, Tattered Seam Binding Ribbon, Plastic Doves, German Glass Glitter Silver Coarse, Egg, Spanish Moss, Vintage Buttons, Lace and Pearl Stream, Low Heat Glue Gun, Vintage Sewing Pattern Paper, Vintage Wall Paper and No. 2 HB Pencil, Millinery Forget Me Nots, Eye Hook, Silver Wire (Copper Coated), and Mica Flakes

Instructions: 1- Paint your canvas in green and allow to dry. 2 - Apply Mod Podge glue to the canvas and adhere pieces of pattern paper to cover the entire surface. 3 - Cut a heart made of vintage wall paper and glue to the center of canvas, decorate the heart with your pencil! Be creative! Add a quote or encouraging word like DREAM! apply glue over the heart and sprinkle it with mica flakes. 4 - Decorate the edge of your canvas with vintage lace. 5- Create a nest with Spanish moss, decorate using the glue gun with a feather, buttons, ribbon, flowers, pearl stream, egg and plastic doves (cover the doves with glue and sprinkle them with German glass glitter). 6 - Insert the eye hook on the bottom of the canvas and connect the chandelier crystal by utilizing the silver wire.

Who knows! i do love Jane...she was such an Artist, such an innovator for her time...so daring...she dared to fulfilled her dream and I just love that! Sometimes, you just have to loose your fear and jump off the cliff to learn that you CAN FLY!!!!

About the Romani People or Gypsies.

I have been fascinated with this nomadic group of people since I was young, not only because of their ability to travel, adapt, to be in deep contact with nature and freedom but because I always felt like I had a little gypsy in me. I come from a very diverse background. I was born in Costa Rica, some of my ancestors immigrated from Spain, some from Germany and some where completely native. And finally, I did travel too and move away from Costa Rica in my Life Journey. I learned about what's happening in Europe with The Gypsies and what seems to be the efforts of powerful people to simply make their life's difficult or to eradicate their culture.

Please note that my opinion may not be that of the sources gathered here.

Wikipedia: The Romani (also Romany, Romanies, Romanis, Roma or Roms; exonym: Gypsy; Romani: Romane or Rromane, depending on the dialect) are an ethnic group living mostly in Europe, who trace their origins to the Indian Subcontinent. The Romani are widely dispersed, with their largest concentrated populations in Europe, especially the Roma of Central and Eastern Europe and Anatolia, followed by the Iberian Kale in Southwestern Europe and Southern France. Meaning of Gypsy according to the Online Urban Dictionary

If you follow the link you will see other meanings that carry a lot of controversy most of them related to Irish Gypsies, it seems that there's a generalization of what a Gypsy is and they mention that they steal and do uncivilized things. I believe that every culture has good and bad, I like to think there's more GOOD than bad in our World and that it's harsh to generalize in any way.

1. A person from Romani descent. An ethnic race with origins from India. They are an often persecuted and hated people among outsiders or gadji (Romani term for non-Romani) due to the immense prejudice and derogatory stereo-types believed by most people. 2. A person whom chooses to travel, and does not possess permanent residence or stability. This term is often referred to anyone practicing such a lifestyle regardless of ethnicity or background. 3. Something that is in character, ownership, or pertaining to the Romani. (ie: This is a gypsy dance; my gypsy friend is funny; you have a gypsy sense of style)

Gypsy Treasures - Art with meaning

As you may have noticed by now, most of my creations always have a meaning. Whether they bloomed while I was meditating about a social crisis or because of my dreams of a better future for all. Therefore, this necklace is dedicated to the Gypsies, their legacy and their struggles. They have given many treasures to humanity and I thank them for that. In my humble opinion, violence is never the solution to any problem, dialogue, understanding, appreciation of our differences, and the search for solutions in which there are win-win situations is the key. My thoughts are with you Virag, I'm sure you miss your hardworking neighbor Maria who was kind to invite you in often... I imagine them drinking a cup of coffee or tea and conversing about their life experiences.

I pray that Life will get better and that new and improved opportunities will come along for our Gypsy Friends in Europe and all along the Globe!

The Art of Layering!

These necklaces look so lovely, whether you wear one, two or more!!!

They are very simple to make too. The base is my figaro chain, all you need is some charms, jump rings and lobster clasp.

You can go from "romantic" to "chic" to "bold" by just combining different charms. The lenghts can be adjusted too, you would just hook your clasp where needed...that's the beauty of this type of chain with large oval links...

So, here's a bold look, I hold the key to the "Versailles Petite Trianon" Secret Garden...
(okay, I just made that up...but it's okay to dream...it nurtures the soul and the imagination)

This is a more subtle variation of the above look...

Hopefully, I will be making some video tutorials soon, I just think it's easier to teach that way, but sometimes I feel like the day doesn't have enough hours for me.

Do you ever think of wonderful positive messages while doing the most mundane things...like cleaning or driving over to work? Do you wish you could share those thoughts with the World because they are so positive that they may actually help someone in a rough patch of the road? Hey...at least they help you to survive the day right?. Well...to me that's what soul notes are about. Usually a simple thought comes to mind and little by little as the day or weeks go by that simple thought blooms into a more complex concept.

Here's my Soul Note of the Day! In English and Spanish! The Spanish version sounds better to me than the English version. ; )

What joy when I saw snow coming down the sky and I did something that I never do...I went out and put rock salt around the driveway, later on I went out and play with Bonita, my maltese...

and as I observed the ducks, geese and swans in the pond I couldn't help but go inside to grab my camera....

the little specks on the picture is the snowflakes as they fell down...

Flocks of geese and ducks continued arriving...I can hear them while I write these lines, they will be here for a while....

It was so noisy out there, so much chatter... like they were celebrating Christmas too! So much Joy filled my soul by just being out there, being part of it. I hope you enjoy too!

Tortilla Española Recipe! Easy and delicious brunch dish...

Nostalgia seems to plague my thoughts often, but it's the good nostalgia which inspires me and brings happiness to my soul. This morning as I was thinking about those weekends I spent with my mother, sisters and brother at the Spanish Club in Costa Rica (Club Campestre Español) I decided to cook a dish we ate there and we all love "Tortilla Española". I am not a culinary expert and in the past I said that I hated cooking; however, that has changed recently as I feel that we need to nurture our bodies with good food and our soul with positive thoughts. So, I wanted to share the recipe with all of you.

My recipe is for three people, you can change the amount of ingredients if you need a bigger Tortilla.

Ingredients: 4 eggs, 2 medium potatoes sliced thinly, little bit of chopped onions, salt and spices to taste, olive oil.
Instructions: In medium heat pour about 1/4 cup of olive oil on your pan, pour the potatoes and cook until lightly golden, add the onion, cook. Once cooked, place the potatoes over a paper towel to drain out some of the oil. Mix the potatoes with the beaten eggs and add salt and spices to taste. Once the potatoes are folded into the eggs, pour the mixture back on your pan on medium - high heat, cover the pan. Once the tortilla is half way cooked, transfer into another pan by flipping it carefully to cook the other side. Place the lid on the other pan.

I found some photos of my first jewelry designs recently and I decided to integrate some of those ideas into new designs and I came up with these lovely Tea Time with Jane Austen charm bracelets. I think it's very important to keep photos, samples or sketches of your work handy so that you can go back to it and learn from the past. This is one of the reasons why I love antiques so much too.

Keepsake Ornaments - A fun and easy project to make with the kids!

As my daughter gravitated to some sparkly $1.00 ornaments while at the market yesterday, I suggested that we could make our own and that they would be treasured by her cousins because they were made by her and with tons of love. She loved the idea!

I fell in love a long time ago with the Romantic Farmstyle by Polly hood, owner of French Cupboard and Counting Your Blessings. Co-publisher of the magazine Porch which gives the World the opportunity to experience this style and others first hand. I had been wanting to create some goodies in that style and this was the perfect opportunity. As soon as we got home, right after putting the groceries away, we set to make some ornaments. I wanted to make something easy for her as she is 6 years old, something that we both could enjoy. Heart shapes are easy, so I draw small hearts on cardboard, then pin to a folded piece of burlap slightly bigger than the heart and cut around the heart (about 1/4" away from it). I pin a piece of bakers twine cord folded in half in the middle top of the heart and starting sewing with zipzag stitch at that place to hold the cord. I went all around the heart. This is the base for your ornament, after this point see what scraps of fabric and junk (lovely junk of course) you have and decorate them with that using your glue gun. We made little notes in the computer that said XOXO Pacific so that her cousins always remember she gave them those hearts during the Holidays. We are making all the gifts this Christmas, no store bought, unless is handmade or from an antique or brocante shop.

The Jewelry Club is a great product if you love to create jewelry but dont have time to visit store after store trying to decide what to design. Our designs are pretty lovely, vintage inspired and we always come up with something new. I say "we" because my dear 7 year old daughter is always helping with the design process.

Backyard Quilt Show

The folks at Lil Country Shoppe delivered a wonderful Backyard Quilt Show this year!

Events like this nurture the community by showcasing a craft that conjures not only technique, but perseverance, love and dedication! All the quilts at the show are true treasures created for the enjoyment of generations to come.

In addition, the event provides an opportunity for many crafters and artists that one way or another have gravitated towards the charms of Lil Country Shop to display and sell their products.

This is Becky from Becky's Rose Cottage we became friends in facebook, realizing we are both Delawarians I invited her to the Backyard Quilt Show.

I had the pleasure of meeting her, she's a wonderful and fun person to be around. I became an admirer of her products and I just had to bring home some lovely ornaments for my Christmas Tree.

This wonderful lady is Martha from La Mar Bags, she is a sweetheart and will be in lot's of shows! Make sure to visit her shop by clicking on the photo!

Summer Memoirs!

Today as I was editing my most recent photos I felt the desire to share some of my favorite

"Summer Memoirs"

At 31, 2010 has been one of the best years of my life as I was able to realize many dreams and overcome obstacles too. I participated in the Shabby Lane Shops retreat, one of my Jewelry pieces was published in Jewelry Armoire, my jewelry is now being sold at two local shops and we expanded our wholesale program while still remaining very exclusive.

After three years in business, I feel that I have matured as a jewelry designer and that customers have guided me in the right direction to be able to offer the products and services that they want. I owe a lot to my customers and friends for their constant encouragement and loyalty.

Pacific, now a kindergartener stopped being my little baby a long time ago. However, I did not realized it until I saw her getting on the school bus and waving goodbye to me and my husband...

She's becoming a charming young lady day after day. On this rainy day she fashioned herself, at this young age she loves make up, to play dress up and to write and draw her own short stories...

We celebrated her 6th birthday with a delicious cake from Bings Bakery! MMM....

She has mastered the scooter and her next goal is to master her new bike...

which was picked by her daddy as a birthday gift, just look at this awesome beach cruiser ...

Bonita (Maltese) has been with us since last Winter and Chloe (Biewer/Yorkie) has been with us since last Friday. They complete our family and we love them deeply...

Chloe comes from a reputable hobby breeder in Delaware http://www.bellacane.com/, Michele is the most wonderful lady I have met and she truly cares about the doggies. I recommend her 100%

Love at first sniff...as mentioned Chloe is the newby in the house and even though Bonita is a little jealous, she's starting to understand that we love them both and that we can't live without them...

To continue with the birthday celebration, uncle Stan visited on the weekend. He too fell under the charm of Chloe. The guy on the right is my husband who as you can see loves the dog too...he wasn't up to getting a new dog but when he met Chloe, it was love at first sight...

My kitchen has been going through a transformation from Country to Farmstyle Chic inspired by many friends such as Polly and Annie, by my favorite Antique Shop Windfall Antiques (115 W Main St. Middletown DE 19709 4107556259) and by the magazine Romantic Country. I still have a looong way to go, the chairs will be covered or repainted and I need a bigger chandelier.

Lovely Pumpkins...

Hubby, the dogs and I went to Filasky's Produce today (a farm in Middletown) and got to pick the loveliest pumpkins in the patch. I purchased pumpkin ice cream too and as soon as I got home I enjoyed it in a pretty vintage porcelain tea cup. Eating in style is important too!

Holiday Matinee Necklace - Tutorial

We are making ready for the Holidays at Antica Treasures! What could be better than making some lovely jewelry to wear or give during this cherished season of the year? MMM, let me thing, maybe some Pumpkin Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream.... So, here's a tutorial for all of you! I am utilizing the new mother and son chain and the holiday garden bead mix. Enjoy!

Materials:
Holiday Garden Bead Mix             7 - 6mm Czech golden pearls
Mother and Son Chain                   8- 4mm Light olive Czech pearls
Head Pins                                    12mm brass ox lobster clasp
3 - 6mm and 12mm brass ox jump rings

Instructions:
Cut a 23" piece of chain, loop on each end a 6mm jump ring and attach the lobster clasp to on end and the 12mm jump ring to the other end. Thread head pins on one 4mm light olive pearl, add a flower and then loop the end of the head pin, repeat this for every flower (4 red & 4 green). Thread head pins on the rest of the beads and loop at the end. Connect the flowers to the chain at more or less every 3" (eye ball the placement of the flowers), in between connect the leaves and the pearls "al gusto" (as you wish in Spanish). Now, wear your necklace proudly!

Summer in the Garden!

My garden is truly struggling with the heat wave that is going on here in Delaware! I feel sorry for the plants and at the same time I am amazed! My double knockout roses all of a sudden grew so much and there's roses everywhere, the Lavender is doing great too and we now have tomatoes!!!! It's a shame that I am the only one that eats them at home. Here are some pics for you to enjoy! I apologize if you see some weeds but with the extreme heat they seem to thrive and I deweed last week and now they are back out.

Finding Inspiration under the Moonlight

I enjoy the view of a wonderful ornamental Pear Tree outside Antica Treasures Studio window, I am in a second floor; therefore, I get to experience what birds do on the tree branches. From establishing and defending territories, courtship, nest building, family raising to communal behaviour. One night, I was very surprised to learn that the baby birds (fledglings) beg for food up to the very late hours of the night and this is how I gained the inspiration to create the Midnight in the Garden Charm Bracelet with some beads from my new Monet's Garden Bead Kit which has around 150 beads. Finding inspiration is not that difficult or something that only artist know off...I encourage you to listen and observe your surroundings and to allow yourself to be inspired by the simplest of things that occur everyday in our beautiful World.

Silver Sunday

Hi everyone,

This is my very first Silver Sunday and I hope that I can join many more! This pitcher was given to me by my husband who was very eager to polish it; however, I love the oxidation that has built on the piece and decided to use it as is. I really love to display roses or lavender on it. For today's Silver Sunday I decided to photograph it next to my porcelain Virgen María and a lovely rose from my Garden. This is my first year gardening and I am in love with my double knockout roses.

Antica Treasures works mostly with brass as a jewelry making metal; however, I do enjoy Silver as well and wanted to share with you a very simple method to oxidize silver.

Ingredients: Liver of Sulphur, Water, Gloves and Silver

Please put on plastic gloves before doing this!!! Protect your eyes too!

Liver of Sulphur is a chemical that usually comes in lump form, take a little lump from the jar and mix it with warm water (warm water accelerates the oxidation process). Mix it with a wooden stick. Place the silver in the liver of sulphur bath until starts to take the color that you desire. Take item(s) out of the solution and rinse with water. If the item looks too dark for you, try using extra fine steel wool to bring out highlights and remove some of the patina.

Volunteering for Enchanted Makeovers

I brought the idea about volunteering with Enchanted Makeovers to my workplace and it was received with a lot of enthusiasm. We met in one of the conference rooms with supplies provided by Antica Treasures and Darvahlous and created tags, cards and jewelry. We also collected funds to create pillowcases and Annette Wilson donated additional pillowcases.

Enchanted Makeovers http://www.enchantedmakeovers.org/ is a great organization to help so get your peers at work together, gear some creativity and volunteer some time with them.

Supporting Enchanted Makeovers Traveling Sanctuary

Enchanted Makeovers is an organization that has truly move something inside my heart and I decided to take action on this feeling. As many of you know I not only manage Antica Treasures and Shabby Shops in a Box but also work for Bank of America who has great programs that allow associates to support community programs. I have engaged my work team and have also take on the responsibility of updating our event Calendar with Enchanted Makeovers projects with the goal of engaging other associates bank wide with the project!

We are now collecting funds to purchase the pillows and I am donating supplies to make cards and hangtags to add with encouraging messsages. My manager will be creating quotes as she loves to write and my peers are truly excited about helping. This is an example on how we can create teamwork towards the benefit of the community in the most unexpected places. Where will you create teamwork today?

The Blessings of Motherhood

When I looked at Jef and Pacific playing kickball the other day, I realized how lucky and blessed I am.

They fill my life with so much love and a feeling of serenity.

I am a bird lover, I started feeding them thistle and they visit my yard by the bunch! Finches, Robins, Chickadees & More! Tutorial

Materials: Fine Oval Brass Chain, Oiseaux Letter Charms, Bird Charms, Heart & bird pendant, Czech Crystal Beads, Antiqued Brass Jumprings, Old time lobster clasp

Instructions: This necklace is composed of two levels, one longer than the other one. I find it useful to work with a dressform to determine the perfect lenght and "fall" of the necklace. Once you have determined the desired lenght, bead the crystals and add the bird connectors to one of the parts. Then add the letters to the shorter part of the necklace. Finish with a lobster clasp and a jumpring.

The ruffled bookmark, a tutorial by Antica Treasures

Materials: Antica Treasures Antiqued Ribbons, Extra Large Tags, Acrylic Rhinestones, Vintage Fabrics (I use remnants from Vintage lace curtains or hankies), Walnut Crystals, Glue Stick, Low/Medium Heat Glue Gun

Antiquing the tags: Start by mixing one cup of warm water (I prefer it in the hot side so it dissolves the crystals better, please watch your hands and don't get burned) with 1 teaspoon of walnut Crystals. Once this mixture is warm, put on some plastic gloves and start dipping the tags one by one and placing them in a covered surface to dry. (I use very large manila type of envelopes to set them for about three hours until they get dry)

Digital Collage: We use digital collage sheets from Darvahlous on Etsy. Print them and cut them to fit your tag. Glue your image to your tag.

Ruffles: Little by little add glue to the edges of the tag and place the ribbon ruffleing it as you go around.

Finish: Glue bow and rhinestone on the top and add more ribbon to the top of the tag.

Burlap Lavender Sachets by Antica Treasures

FARMSTYLE SACHET

Learn how to make this lovely Farmstyle Lavender Sachet

Instructions by Antica Treasures

Materials: Burlap Bags (4"x6"), Manila Tags, Lovely Images, German Glass Glitter, Antiqued Ribbons, Gluestick, Lavender Flowers

Tools: Sewing Machine

Instructions:

1. Place 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of lavender inside the burlap bags, sew the top portion of your bag with a rustic zig zag stitch, ensure that a piece of ribbon is sewn inside the opening for easy hanging.

2. Hand stamp a manila tags with a French Text Rubber Stamp, use chocolate brown ink, antique the edges of the tag with your stamp pad. Glue the image of the Mannequin or other lovely image to your tag, use a glue pen around the edges of the image and sprinkle german glass glitter.

3. Place a ribbon bow on your tag and attach to the burlap bag with a safety pin.

My favorite store is Windfall Antiques located in Mainstreet. The owners Mr. and Mrs. Crawford are the kindest and sweetest people I have ever met. They are so knowledgeable and courteous. I visit almost every weekend! If you have time to stop by at some point please do so.

The Artful Tag - Antiquing tags/bookmarks tutorial by Antica Treasures

Hi Friends!

I enjoy so much making these lovely tags that I had to share how to make them with all of you. They are easy and quick to make. Make them for your loved ones and why not making them for you? I enjoy them tucked in my books and craft magazines.

Supplies: Walnut Crystals, Mica Flakes, Glue Stick, Martha Stewart permanent glue, Seam Binding Ribbon, No.6 Tags, one cup hot water, Collage Sheets by Darvahlous at http://www.etsy.com/shop/Darvahlous

Instructions:

1. Mix well 1 teaspoon of Walnut Crystals with one cup of hot water (1min in microwave) in a reusable plastic cup, let it sit for 20 minutes. Pour the liquid in a square pyrex container (craft use only), dip each tag and place over absorbent surface of hang outside (make sure to protect the countertops, this really stains). Allow to dry for 6 hours approximately.

2. Cut out the lovely digital collage sheets by Darvahlous and glue them to the tag with an acid free glue stick. If you have a stamp you can adorn the tag with, please go ahead.

3. Apply the permanent glue (which has a nice tip that allows a precise application ) around the edges of each image clipping Position the tag on top of a plate and sprinkle the mica flakes (the plate collects the extra mica which you want to reuse).

4. Cut the ribbon in 10 to 12 inches portion and add to each tag.

5. While you allow the tags/bookmarks to dry prepare some tea, relax and enjoy your artful work!

From Trash to Treasure

We found this hutch in a yardsale for $20.00, it used to be brown. My hubby, a truly talented man transformed it for me into this precious hutch that currently holds the treasures that I've found through my creative journey. He once found a jewelry box (the big standing ones) that he found in the trash and he also transformed it into a lovely treasure. I am encouraging him to continue creating more items and perhaps re-sale them at some point; however, he's not interested at the moment, maybe someday.

My mom had the great idea to decorate this dress form with some doillys...this dressform has gone through so many transformations, I was so unhappy with the results everytime. I tried Heather Bullard's technique for antiquing a dress form about a year ago and I failed, then...I painted it blue, then collaged on it...and I hated it. So finally, I painted it white and antiqued it. My mom found a bunch of doillies that I had gotten at a flea market and we dressed her with a tea stained cotton dress and placed doillies here and there and VOILá....it became Antica Treasures Jewelry Display.

We adopted Bonita yesterday, I bathed her and groomed her. I know we have a long way to go until her coat grows long and gets whiter. She's a Maltese and we have committed to love her and care for her. She's even wearing some Coco Chanel perfume. We couldn't be happier!
